Garlic In The Garden

follow us!

Garlic can easily be grown by the home gardener and a few plants will supply a family.

  • Soil:  Garlic should be planted in well drained soil in full sun.

  • When:  Garlic is planted in the fall or early spring with temperate climates.  In other areas, it can be planted in larger pots or planters in a greenhouse.

  • Spacing:  Plant cloves 1" to 3" apart just below the surface of the soil.  Always plant the cloves with the top, or pointy side, up in beds 6" to 8" high.

  • Moisture:  Fertilize and keep moist until first sign of maturity.  If you are watering too much, the garlic leaves will begin to yellow.  Keep soil moist, but not overly wet.

  • Mulching:  Mulch moderate soil conditions.  However, the quality of the mulch is important.  The mulch should be medium in texture such as chopped straw or tall fresh-cut grass.
